Check Your Health Insurance Coverage Before You Go Abroad

Often times college students decide to study abroad for a semester or even a year. It is important to remember during this exciting time that medical assistance may be needed when you are overseas.

Medical care abroad can become extremely expensive and often times your home coverage plan will not cover the costs that are incurred abroad. The last thing you want to fret about in an emergency situation is whether or not you have coverage. There are study abroad programs that will provide you with the option of purchasing a Student health plan for your time outside of the country. This is a great way to make sure you or your child has the coverage needed. You may have a health insurance plan at home currently that does cover abroad medical expenses, but it is imperative that you make sure you have the coverage you need.  Take the time to understand and go through the medical coverage you have.  Medical insurance can be difficult to understand so talk to your agent and discuss all your questions.

It will be helpful to put together a list of local medical assistance facilities for your trip. Know where the hospitals and doctor offices are before you go to avoid confusion while you are abroad. Having a list of allergies, your blood type and any other medical information in the country’s language you are within will only aid you in receiving faster and more efficient care. Be prepared!
