Save on Auto Insurance While Your Student Is Away at School
This fall, if your student is heading off to college and you’re looking for ways to save, you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance policy.
For many teens and young adults, living away at college or boarding school means they will be driving less, or not driving at all. If they’re not taking a car with them to school, they may be eligible for the Student Away at School discount, also known as a Resident Student discount.

Eligibility
You may qualify for the Student Away at School discount on your auto policy if your student:
- Is under the age of 25
- Is a full-time student
- Lives at college or boarding school more than 100 miles from home (where the car is garaged)
- Does not have access to a vehicle at school
- Only occasionally drives a car listed on your policy when they’re home during breaks and holidays
Certain exceptions may apply depending on your state and your auto insurance carrier. Get in touch with your insurance agent to see if you are eligible.
Benefits
Auto insurance premiums tend to be higher for younger drivers, until they reach age 25 and maintain a clean driving record. Keeping your teen or young adult driver on your policy can be costly—and not worth it if they will only drive your vehicle occasionally.
On average, drivers save about 14% on their auto insurance policy thanks to the Student Away at School discount.
Other Discounts for Students
In addition to the Student Away discount, teen and young adult drivers can earn auto insurance discounts by:
- Getting good grades: Good student discounts offered by many carriers could save you up to 25% on your premium.
- Maintaining a clean driving record: When teens and young adults stay accident-free, they typically see a significant decrease in their auto insurance premiums around age 25.
- Driver education programs: Completing driver education programs, like TeenSMART, can help teens save up to 10% on their premiums.
- Bundling: If your college student is renting an apartment at school, you could bundle auto insurance with renter’s insurance. Bundling discounts typically range from 5% to 25%.
- Theft protection: Installing anti-theft devices on your teen’s vehicle, like steering wheel locks, brake locks, audible alarms, or GPS tracking systems, could earn you a discount of 5% to 25% on your premium.
